What To Expect After a Blepharoplasty

What To Expect After a Blepharoplasty

Want to know what to expect after eyelid surgery? Dr. Bassiri wants you to be prepared. Our New York office performs dozens of eyelid surgeries (blepharoplasty) every year. We always do what it takes to get you the results you want. But when the procedure’s over, you’ve got to make your recovery #1 on your priority list.

Immediate Post-Surgery Expectations

If you’ve made it through your eyelid surgery with Dr. Bassiri, congratulations! You’ve probably gotten most of the hard part out of the way. But blepharoplasty, like any surgery, has some after-effects. Mild swelling, bruising, and blurriness are common. Here’s what to know about the first few days:

Swelling and Bruising

Expect some puffiness and bruising around your eyes. But don’t stress — it usually fades after the first week or so. If you notice your bruising seems to be growing, that’s ok too. “Black eyes” are normal after eyelid surgery. It won’t last long. Cold compresses help manage these effects. Swelling gradually goes down within a few days.

Blurry Vision and Light Sensitivity

Some blurriness or sensitivity to light may linger for a day or two. This usually results from ointments applied to protect the eyes during surgery. Wearing sunglasses can ease light sensitivity. Be patient—clear vision returns soon.

Mild Pain and Tightness

You’ll also feel a little tightness or soreness. It’s nothing to worry about. Dr. Bassiri may prescribe medications to keep you comfortable. Remember not to rub your eyes. It’ll get in the way of your healing.

First Week Recovery

As the days pass, you’ll start seeing some positive changes. Any swelling and bruising will let up. But we’re not quite out of the woods yet.

Stitches and Cleaning Instructions

If Dr. Bassiri uses stitches, our New York team will remove them within the first week. We will show you how to keep the area clean and protected. If you want to heal faster, follow our post-care instructions. Keep your eyelid area free of makeup. Skip lotions or skin creams unless the doctor says otherwise.

Swelling Reduction

Most swelling decreases significantly by the end of the first week. If you notice some puffiness after that, it’s not a big deal. Dr. Bassiri and our team suggests sleeping with your head elevated and using cold compresses.

Activity Limitations

In the first week, avoid activities that increase blood flow to your head, like bending over, heavy lifting, or strenuous exercise. These can cause additional swelling. Instead, focus on light activities and take it easy. Most people feel ready to resume normal routines by the end of the first week. Give your body time to rest and recover fully.

What To Expect After a Blepharoplasty

Weeks 2-4: Returning to Daily Routines

Most of our New York patients start feeling more like themselves during this period. The swelling continues to go away, and you’ll likely feel ready to ease back into your normal life.

Gradual Return to Activities

Around weeks two or three, you can typically return to work and resume exercise. We recommend not lifting anything too heavy. Dr. Bassiri will guide you on how to pick up these routines safely.

Scar Healing and Care

Incisions may look pink or slightly raised. They’ll subside over the coming weeks. If approved, you may start scar treatments. Ask Dr. Bassiri or our team about light moisturizers or ointments to help the area heal.

Follow-Up Visits

Dr. Bassiri will monitor your progress in follow-up appointments at our New York clinic to confirm that you’re healing like you should. These visits are also a chance to discuss any lingering questions or concerns.

Long-Term Healing and Results

As you continue healing, your results become more refined. While the first few weeks reveal a lot, the final results take a little more time.

Continued Healing Timeline

The swelling should be mostly gone by the end of the first month. Small changes continue, especially in how scars soften and blend with your natural skin tone. Dr. Bassiri advises patience, as full results may take up to six months to completely settle in.

Final Results

Once fully healed, your eyes will look natural and youthful. You’ll see that any excess or puffiness has been reduced. Scars will be minimal and well-disguised. Dr. Bassiri’s expertise in blepharoplasty means you’ll enjoy a balanced, natural look that highlights your facial features.

Ongoing Care for Best Results

Even after the primary healing is complete, it’s helpful to protect the area with sunscreen and moisturize it. Regular check-ins with our New York team can provide further advice for long-lasting results. Embracing gentle care will help your refreshed look last a long time.

Post-Surgery Care Tips for Optimal Results

You deserve the best possible results. Following a few simple care tips can make a big difference in your recovery.

Moisturizing and Cold Compresses

Dr. Bassiri may recommend lubricating eye drops or an ointment to prevent dryness in your first week. A cool, gentle compress can eliminate puffiness and provide a soothing touch to sensitive skin around your eyes.

Head Elevation

Sleep with your head slightly elevated to further reduce swelling—an extra pillow or two often does the trick. Elevating your head encourages fluid to drain away from your eyes. It’s a simple way to support faster healing in the initial weeks.

Limiting Screen Time

We know you’re eager to show your results on social media! But please watch your screen time. That means phones, computers, tablets, and TVs. Extended screen use can dry out and strain your eyes. Give your eyes a rest to help them recover comfortably.
